Edelmann was born in Ústí nad Labem, Czechoslovakia, into a German-Czech family. Edelmann studied printmaking at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (Düsseldorf Arts Academy) from 1953 to 1958 . He started his career as a freelance illustrator and designer, creating images for theatre posters and advertising in Germany. He was also a regular illustrator and cover designer for youth magazine Twen between 1961 and 1969.
Edelmann was one of the pioneers of the surreal psychedelic style that became popular in the late 1960s and he was asked to work on ‘Yellow Submarine’ as an art director and character designer. After the film was released, Edelmann spent a brief period as a partner in an animation company in London. He then moved to Amsterdam in 1970, designing book jackets and posters for plays and films.
Edelmann went on to teach industrial graphic design at Fachhochschule Düsseldorf (Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences), Art and Design at Fachhochschule Köln (Cologne University of Applied Sciences) and eventually became Professor of Illustration at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart in 1989.
