Esso Mobile (c.1960s)

Year: Undated (c.1960s)

Format: Mobile

Illustrator: Uncredited

Client: Esso

Details: This card features perforated components and the instructions to assemble them into a mobile. It is Dutch and undated (but looks c.1960s). The theme is flight through the ages, with a variety of illustrated flying machines.

The mascot is ‘Happy’ the Oil Drop Man, a character first introduced by Esso’s Danish company during World War II. He eventually made it to the US in 1958 and featured on a wide range of promotional materials and merchandise. However, Esso’s “Put a tiger in your tank!” advertising campaign proved so successful that Happy was replaced with the tiger mascot in the late 1960s.
