Details: I found this press advert for The Guardian newspaper in a 1961 BBC International Light Music Festival programme.

Though the artwork is unsigned, the character is also used in a poster advertising The Guardian from 1960 and appears to be part of the same campaign. The designer of the poster was Douglas Jones, with artwork by Derrick Hass (1928 -2006).
