Simple Slimming - Woman and Beauty (c.1950s)

Year: c.1950s

Format: Booklet

Illustrator: Geoffrey Salter

Client: Woman and Beauty

Details: This c.1950s ‘Simple Slimming’ booklet was produced by Woman and Beauty magazine. The artwork is signed by Geoffrey Salter, whose work I have featured here previously. Salter illustrated magazines, book covers (notably P.G. Wodehouse novels) and adverts for clients including BEA and Guinness.

The booklet is an interesting insight into the mid-century approach to dieting. It’s a mix of balanced diet advice, moral judgements on food groups (representations of devils and angels feature throughout) and recommendations of amphetamines.
