Details: This 'Coffee for enjoyment' booklet details the coffee production process from bean to cup. The front cover bears a large red stamp mark for a grocers in Keynsham so this image shows the back cover, which features the same artwork but without any major marks. The illustration was created in 1956 by Stan Krol.
Stan Krol (1910-1985) was a graphic designer born in Warsaw, Poland and later based in London. He originally studied chemistry and also worked for a few years in his father's paint and varnish factory. Krol moved to Scotland where he joined the army during WWII. Apart from some evening classes, he did not receive any artistic training until 1945 at the age of 35.
After leaving the army due to injury or illness, he decided to become a commercial artist and studied at the Dundee College of Art. In 1948 he moved to London, where the General Post Office (GPO) gave him a first professional opportunity and commissioned a poster.
Between the late 1940s and early 1970s, he produced publicity material for companies including RoSPA, BOAC and London Transport. He also taught lettering and layout at Borough Art School.
